Hosting bills surprise people in one direction: upward. The server itself is rarely the problem — egress bandwidth is. A site serving 3 MB pages at 100k visits a month moves roughly 880 GB, and at typical cloud egress pricing that bandwidth can cost more than the compute running the site. This is why the page size input matters as much as the traffic input.
The three tiers suit different stages. Shared hosting and small VPS plans are unbeatable below a few hundred GB of traffic for static or lightly dynamic sites. Managed cloud (with autoscaling) earns its premium once traffic is spiky or you need multiple instances. Dedicated fleets only make sense at sustained scale where reserved capacity beats on-demand pricing.
The cheapest optimization is almost always a CDN: shifting static assets to a CDN typically removes 60–90% of origin egress and lets a much smaller server handle the same audience. Before upgrading a tier, measure how much of your bandwidth is cacheable — the answer is usually "most of it."
